How to print Envelopes
QuickEnvelopes makes printing your envelopes so easy. You just need to follow these 3 steps (and if you are using the same envelope type as last time, just 2 steps!)
- Select the envelope type (if changed since last time).
- Type in the name and address, or select from Contacts.
- Print your envelope.
When you first purchase the app, you can fully evaluate it by printing up to 5 separate envelopes, without having to pay anything. To continue using it, you then have to either subscribe or purchase the lifetime In App Purchase.
You can change text, font, color and size and move it to any position on the envelope.
You can add a return address, or select from previously created return address.
This guide will go through these steps, starting with the basics. It will then include the extra flexibility for your design should you subscribe to the Pro version of the app. The guide will be quite detailed to ensure you will know exactly what to do. Hopefully this will not give the impression that using the app is complicated – it certainly is not! It is called QuickEnvelopes for a reason!
The screenshots below were taken on the mac version of the app. The operation on the iPad is very similar so hopefully you will be able to follow the instructions easily enough on the iPad.
Please note: when you move the cursor away from the envelope on a mac screen, after a short delay, the app will preview the envelope i.e. will remove items from the display which will not get printed e.g. fonts selection. In the instructions below, if you do not see the described controls, move the cursor onto the envelope, and more specifically, to the item being changed, such as the main address, to reveal the editing controls etc.
First Select Envelope Type
When you start the app for the very first time, it will default to an envelope that is popular in your region. If you have used the app already, and selected a different envelope, it will remember this choice. Therefore, after selecting an envelope the first time (if necessary), you do not have to select an envelope each time – only when you want to change to a different envelope type.
The current envelope type is displayed at the bottom-right of the envelope on screen.
So, if you do need to change the envelope type, you do so via the drop-down on the top toolbar.
When you click on the dropdown, you will see the envelope selection screen. This contains 4 dropdowns to help find your desired envelope type more easily.
If you have used the app previously, and perhaps already used some different envelope types, these will be shown in the Recent dropdown. So if you tend to always use a few different types, you can quickly find them in the Recent dropdown.
Otherwise, you can select the dropdown for your region, select the envelope that you want from the dropdown, and tap/click the Select Envelope button.
Entering Name and Address
There are two modes for entering the name and address:
- Single Envelope Print
- Contacts Group Batch Print
To select the desired mode, just hover below the envelope, and select the mode if not currently what you want. The mode selected will be remembered, so you only need to do this if changing mode.
Single Envelope Mode
Single Envelope mode is usually used when printing a single envelope. I say “usually” as it is possible to print just one envelope from a Contacts Group.
In Single Envelope Mode, there are two ways to enter the name and address. Both methods are super easy making it simple to open the app, type or select a name/address, and print.
Manual Entry
You can simply click in the main address area of the envelope and type the name and address. Then print. So easy.
Note: You can actually save a name and address for future use if you want.
Select Stored Name
The other way to populate the name and address is to select a name and address stored on your iPad or mac – either from your Contacts, or a name that you typed previously, and Saved as described above. To quickly find a stored name, click the Search button. Then start typing the desired name and select from the names shown.
You will notice in the example screenshot above, that one of the names has a small keyboard icon to the left – “John Appletree”. This indicates that this was a name that was typed in manually and saved. The other names were found in the mac’s Contact’s app.
If the name came from Contacts, then it is possible that there is more than one address for that person. In that case, you can select the address you want.
Hover over the text if you have a keyboard, or tap on the address if not, to reveal the format panel above the address and you should see a Select Address button. Tap/Click the button and select the address.
Print your envelope
At this stage, you can go ahead and print your envelope by simply clicking the Print button from the toolbar.
Note: if the print button is not being displayed, you might have to increase the width of the app’s window a little first.
Adjusting Envelope Appearance
Although you might often just type in a name and address and then just print, there are ways to adjust the appearance of your envelope.
The changes that you can do include:
- Change the address font
- Change the text color
- Change the text size and spacing
- Move the text anywhere on the envelope
- Add a return address to the front of the envelope
Changing Text Appearance
You can change the text font, colour and size using either basic mode or flexi mode available.
The difference between the two modes is that with basic mode, all of the text will have the same font, color and size. With flexi-mode, each line of the text can have a different font, color and/or size.
In basic mode, the changes are made via the formatting panel revealed above the text when you hover over the text.
So in Basic mode, click the aA button to reveal the font/color popup and make the changes.
You can also change the justification and line spacing via the formatting panel.
In flexi mode, the aA button has moved from the formatting panel to the end of each line of text – allowing each line to be formatted differently.
Adjusting Text Size
There are actually 2 ways of changing the text size. As you probably noticed, the text size can be changed in the font/color popups shown above.
You can also change the size by dragging the little blue resizing control found on the lower left of the text on the mac, or using 2-finger pinch/zoom on a trackpad or iPad. Dragging the blue resizing control down will cause the text size to increase. Dragging up will cause the text size to decrease.
Moving Name and Address
You can drag the name and address to any position on the envelope.
You do this by simply dragging the text with a mouse or finger.
Note: you can also change the text position in the app’s settings, but it is much easier to see the result by simply dragging the text to the desired position on the envelope.
Adding a Return Address
You can add a return address to the front of the envelope. This will default to the top-left of the envelope, but can be repositioned if desired. You can add an image, if you want, to the left of the address text.
If your own Contact information is found in your Contacts, it will initially be used as your return address. If you have more than one address e.g. Home and Work addresses, they will both be available. Perhaps you would use the Home one for friends and relations, and the other for work mail.
To change to a different return address, click on the return address text. You will then be presented with the Return Address Selection window.
To select a different return address, just click on the one you want.
If you do not want the envelope to print a return address, click where it says NO RETURN ADDRESS.
You can edit a return address, including an image to the left, by clicking the little edit icon to the bottom-right of the address. This will allow you to edit the text itself, or change its font, color and size.
Finally, you can add a new return address by clicking Add Return Address, and entering the details on the next screen,
On an iPad, if there is no return address on the envelope, you can add one via the “+” button on the left of the toolbar.
